Friday night I attended the iHeart Radio Music Festival at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. My friend Anthony was in town from New York City and he had an extra ticket. I was excited. Sounded like a great lineup! I enjoyed seeing a few groups and singers I had never watched LIVE before. Bon Jovi and Usher were my favorite performances. There were a lot of fun surprises and appearances too. Toward the end, I went to get a drink before Green Day performed. I mentioned to the woman next to me in line that I could do without Green Day. I know their music, it’s okay, but I was looking forward to seeing Rihanna, who was performing last. She agreed somewhat, but said she had seen Green Day live before and that I should give it a chance, they put on a good show.
Okay, cool,” I thought. I was going to do just that! Here we go… Green Day.
They sounded good. But, it all went down hill. The lead singer turned me off big time. Billie Joe Armstrong was swearing left and right. He was screaming at us. F this, F that. He called for a woman to come up on stage and dance with him, she did, then he quickly walked away. He was yelling that he should have more time. He said, “I’m not f—ing Justin Bieber, you motherf—–s.” He smashed his guitar. He walked off stage.
OKAY then. That was interesting.
I was back to my original thought. I don’t like Green Day. I even tweeted about it when I got home. I thought it was trashy. I don’t mind swearing. It was just too much. Over and over again, and in an angry manner.
Flash forward to today, and MTV reports… “Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has announced he will undergo treatment for substance abuse.”
The band broke the news Sunday evening on their Facebook page, posting a message that read:
“Billie Joe is seeking treatment for substance abuse. We would like everyone to know that our set was not cut short by Clear Channel and to apologize to those we offended at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas. We regretfully must postpone some of our upcoming promotional appearances.”
Ah, now it makes sense. I thought the rant was a bit much. I do hope Billie Joe gets the help he needs, and can return to the stage. As I said, the band sounded great, but as someone who had never seen them LIVE before, I thought his antics were a normal part of his performance. I was immediately taken back. I give him credit for doing something about it though. I really do.
By the way, Rihanna was just alright. She didn’t sing much. Didn’t dance much. But I love her music. And she looked real pretty.
I like the iHeart festival concept. It was fun, and I hope it keeps returning to Las Vegas.
